Using the Archive

 

As an institution concerned with collecting and documenting film, Film Archive Austria welcomes anybody interested in using its archives. The house sets great store by easy and efficient access to its collections.
To this end, a state-of-the-art infrastructure was implemented at the Audio-Visual Center Augarten, which provides an entryway to all the collections. In the Study Center’s reading room, archival materials can be viewed and subjected to scholarly analysis. You will also find there an overview with information about the most important collections.

CUSTOMER SERVICE

Our customer service handles all commercial inquiries and requests, providing counsel to film and TV productions, museums, exhibitions, businesses and agencies across the globe on the optimal use of archival material. Research and film viewings can be conducted at the Audio-Visual Center Augarten. Archival materials can be ordered in the form of DVDs or electronic files.

LIBRARY & STUDY CENTER

Established in 2001, the Study Center at the Audio-Visual Center Augarten serves as the interface between the FAA’s collections and the public. In the Study Center’s reading room, visitors have access to a film library, a library, all our printed-matter collections (photographs, posters, programs) as well as bequests and a number of special collections. Film viewings can be arranged by appointment. In addition, the Studio Theater (seating capacity 45) can be rented by groups for screenings in professional large-scale projection. During opening hours, use of the library is free of charge. FAA members also have free access to the film library and other special collections held by the FAA.

FILM COLLECTION

At the Central Film Archive Laxenburg, the FAA administers Austria’s largest film collection. Those wishing to enquire about the availability of a specific film or the material condition of an item are encouraged to ask our customer service representatives at the Audio-Visual Center Augarten. In our technical department, high grade digitizations of our analog holdings are produced for a wide range of applications. In addition, the Study Center’s film library boasts 25,000 titles on video or DVD available for viewing.

PHOTO COLLECTION

The Film Archive is the owner of Austria’s largest collection of film-related photography. The photo collection is run as a professional visual archive equipped with in-house facilities for digitizations. Questions related to our collection will be promptly answered. Those interested in conducting research are requested to make an appointment. Photographs can be sent by request as e-mail, CD-ROM or via Ftp-server.

POSTER COLLECTION

You are working on an exhibition, a project or a publication and need information about our poster collection? Film posters can be viewed at the Audio-Visual Center by appointment only. High-grade reproductions can be made by an FAA partner company on request. Please send detailed inquiries or requests to the department for film documentation, or simply give us a call.

COLLECTION OF FILM PROGRAMMES

The FAA owns one of the world’s largest collections of film programs spanning the entire history of cinema from its inception to the present day. You are working on a paper, an exhibition or a publication and need information about our holdings? Our collection of film programs can be viewed at the Audio-Visual Center Augarten by appointment only. Digital reproductions can be made on request.
